She shrugged as if it made no difference although it did and she was having a hard time hiding her feelings. “Roger stuck it out with me for a while, figuring I’d return to my former self. But I had flashbacks of the killings, night terrors so vivid that I beat on him in my sleep, trying to make the bad go away.”
Connor cast her an elusive smile. Standing next to the wash basin with a soapy scrub brush and a frying pan caked with burned fish remnants, he had an appealing quality about him. Any man who would clean a frying pan that was that much of a mess had to have some good in him.
“Hey,” Kat admonished him for giving her such a smug smile. “If I slept with you and began beating on you in the middle of the night, I bet you wouldn’t stick around either.”
“Try me.”
Connor looked dead serious. Maya looked genuinely astonished, but then she quickly looked away, attempting to hide a smile.
Even Kat’s mouth gaped before she could recover. “You wouldn’t say that if you were in a deep sleep and I slugged you.”
“I bet we could come to some kind of arrangement that would mutually satisfy our need to sleep.”
Just the wicked gleam in his eyes said he wasn’t thinking about sleep.
“Yeah, right.” Kat quickly changed the subject. “When are you returning home?” She hoped she wasn’t delaying their own trip home for her sake. If she was, no matter what her condition, she was out of here so she could let them get on with their trip plans. All they needed to do was point her in the right direction.
“We’ll be leaving you off at the resort, then we’ll go home from there,” Connor said, his voice taking on a business-like tone. It was clear he wanted her out of their lives. Pronto.
Feeling like a party crasher, Kat figured his attitude was because she had messed up their vacation to such an extent. How could they have had any fun out here, spending so much time caring for a sick person they hadn’t even known?
Jaguar Fever
But Maya looked crestfallen. And Kat felt terrible about it. She seemed genuinely to like her, and Kat could really use a friend like that. She had left the Army and now was totally free—no permanent job, no home, just a few Army friends, who didn’t know about her final mission, that lived so far away, she might not ever see them again. She sighed. After this trip to the jungle, she had planned to set down roots this time, unlike with the military that had moved her around so much. Or foster care.
Kat smiled at Maya, ignoring Connor’s gruffness. She was just as tanned as Connor, just in as great a shape as him, really pretty, and Kat’s petite height. Despite Connor’s male posturing, Kat would not be intimidated. He could go prune his plants, for all she cared. Kat and Maya could have an all girls’ night out. Or whatever else Maya liked to do.
“Let me know when it would be a good time to visit you at your home in Texas, Maya. I’m…in between jobs right now. So I want to take the time to travel a bit before I start the job hunt all over again and try to figure out where I want to settle down.”
“Then you’re coming home with us,” Maya said, chin up, arms folded, defying Connor to say no.
Connor glowered at his sister, but didn’t say anything for a minute as if he was hoping Kat would decline the invitation, and he wouldn’t have to butt in and say no to the visit.
“I’d love to,” Kat said, assuming then that Maya owned half of the nursery and the home, and had to have half raised the cats also. “I won’t stay long, just a couple of days. But…I’d really enjoy that.” Of course she meant to do so after she went to the resort and did everything else she had planned to do on some other guided tours before she got lost in the jungle and came down with a fever. She really had hoped subsequent pleasant trips to the Amazon would help to get rid of her flashbacks.
Maya beamed, but she didn’t dare look at Connor.
Connor growled something about leaving it alone, which Kat didn’t understand. Then he left the hut, and Kat figured he was going to get away from the females who were wreaking havoc with his ability to exert his male dominance over all.

Interview with Connor Anderson

Tell us about yourself. What are you like?
Some would say I’m tenderhearted as in if you’re sick, I’ll bring you through it. My sister sometimes says I’m growly when I don’t get my way. I tend to be territorial, so if someone encroaches, I’ll do something about it. I’m alpha all the way and don’t back down. Kathleen would say I’m possessive, which goes along with being territorial. I’m a great cook and will even wash the pots and pans. Or I’ll catch supper even when doing so is dangerous to one’s health. Kathleen thinks I’m hot and sexy, so if you think you might want to take a waterfall shower alone, forget that. I’ll wash your back and lots more.
What do you think is your strongest point?
Protector of those who can’t protect themselves, or even when they can!
Do you have a weakness? (If so, what do you think it is? What does your lover think it is? What does your enemy think it is?)
My weakness is Kathleen. She’s human, which means, paws off. I want her, but I have to fight that which I know I can’t have.
Kathleen isn’t sure what my problem is. She knows I really like her, care for her, lust after her. But something is holding me back, but I can’t let her in on the secret.
My enemies think I’m only human. Only a tourist. Only a man who’s saddled with two women I must protect at all costs.
What drives you to do the things you do? What makes you want to be the "good guy?"
I believe in the simple life—sharing my love of nature with my sister at their garden nursery in Texas and visit the jungle when we want to run on the wild side. We’ve had our fair share of dealing with drug runners in the Amazon, but when Kathleen joins the party, the stakes get much higher. She’s an innocent, although she tried to help take down the bad guys when she was in the Army. Now I’m there to protect her…it’s the nature of the beast. Protect what’s mine that which is part of my territory.
What's your favorite guilty pleasure?
Cleaning up in the waterfall with a sexy human woman I want to make my own when I should be keeping my paws off!
A biography has been written about you. What do you think the title would be in six words or less?
Savage Hunger at Its Best
Tell us an embarrassing story that has to do with a pet. If you have no pets, a story about a significant other will do. ^_^
A snapping turtle bit my sister, Maya, in the lake on our property. I got out of the lake as quickly as possible, leaving her behind and she’s never let me live it down. She told Kathleen about it. But the thing of it was, I did go back later and make turtle soap out of it.
If you came with a warning label, what would it say?
Hot, dangerous, wild, and could change your life significantly.

Please Fill in the Blanks

I love pizza with Pepperoni -- jaguars love meat.
I'm always ready for a romp in the jungle.
When I'm alone, I think of you, hot, sexy, and ready for me. .
You'd never be able to tell, but I have a thing for women who get lost in my neck of the jungle.
If I had a halo it would be because I protect those in my territory, no matter what the danger.
If I could convince you of how wonderful being a shifter is, letting that primal part of us roam free I'd turn you in a heartbeat so you could share my world with me.
I can never commit to a human woman, who was not willing to be one of my kind because she would need to share my love of all things jaguar.
