Halloween Pizza Party 2013 Multiple Authors Share Love of the Pie! #RLFblog #authors

Pizza! 

It's Halloween, and rather than do a typical post about pumpkins or candy, I thought I'd gather a bunch of friends together and throw a pizza party. The selections include something for almost everyone. In fact, there are so many I'll do another version of this later in the year.

One of the questions on nearly every interview in 2013 was a chance to fill in the blank with items for a favorite pizza. RLF blog is happy to present a huge selection of goodies that show just how much alike we all are. A large group chose pepperoni (my personal favorite), followed by cheese (my second favorite). Where available, I included the Twitter handle of the author. If they didn't supply one, I used Facebook or their website. Armed with the knowledge of someone who likes your type of pizza, go friending!

Cheese

The first entry gets major points for being thorough. And funny!

I love pizza with vegan cheese. Well, I don’t actually love it, and I’m not a vegan either, but I can’t eat ordinary cheese so I make do with the vegan stuff. It’s a bit like old window putty as it doesn’t melt properly so it just looks like an orange blob but I can’t imagine pizza without some kind of cheese on it!

Interview with Aphrodite, Goddess of Love

Tell us about yourself.

I am the Greek Goddess of Love, and I adore jewelry, and all things involving beauty and love. However, I have recently grown bored with the perfection of my existence. Who can bear to eat ambrosia and nectar every single day? I decided I would entertain myself by helping mortals find their one true love. And what better place than Regency London, where they are enamored of anything to do with the ancient Greek world.

Tell us about Ares.

I utterly adore him, even though he loves war, and fighting, and conflict of all kinds. He is the complete opposite of me, which may be why we are so passionate for each other. It is also what gave me the idea to play matchmaker. Or maybe I should say "mismatchmaker". It hasn't gone as smoothly with Lord Rakehell and Georgiana as I'd hoped. . . But I'm confident I can remedy everything. After all, my reputation is at stake here.

What do you think is your strongest point?

My persistence.

What would Ares say is your biggest weakness?

My persistence.

What do you wish was different about your life?

I adore my life! I am having so much fun masquerading in Regency London as Lady Aphrodite Carramont, with only Ares aware of my true identity. I'm not sure when I'll be ready to return home to Mount Olympus. It could be a while.

If you were given your fondest wish, what would it be?

That everyone would fall madly in love with their one true love and live happily ever after. BUT, only after I've had a chance to be involved, of course. It wouldn't be much fun otherwise. I'm definitely looking forward to the next rogue on my list, the one known as Lord Wastrel. He's proving to be a bit of a challenge.

Describe a place of perfect refuge.

I don't suppose I can say the bedchamber I share with Ares, can I? Well, that is still my answer, even if I shouldn't say so.

Nat and Scott are professional cricketers. Nat Seddon is 27 years old and plays for Australia, while Scott Alverley is 21 and plays for England.

Interview with Nat Seddon

Tell us about yourself.

Hi there. My name's Nat Seddon. I'm a professional cricketer and, as I'm sure you can tell from my accent, I play for Australia. I'm a fast bowler, which means I have to keep myself pretty fit, and at six feet five, there's quite a lot of me to keep fit. I love cricket, but when I'm not playing or training, there's nothing I like more than curling up with a good book and a glass of wine.

Tell us about Scott.

I know this'll sound really soppy, but Scott is the only man I've ever loved. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't a virgin when we met, but my sexual partners had always been friends and nothing more. But then I met Scott and everything – and I mean everything – changed. I don't mind admitting I was a bit uptight before I met Scott. I was always in control of my life and I didn't let anyone get too close. We spend so much time travelling in this job, I didn't want the heartbreak of a long-distance relationship, but the moment I met Scott, well…I tried so hard not to fall for him, but there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it.

Scott couldn't be more different from me. He's got wavy blond hair and he's quite slender for a sportsman. And let's face it, he could be a catwalk model. I still get shivers just looking at him sometimes. He's the most beautiful man I've ever met–and the scattiest. He's so disorganized and he comes up with the daftest ideas. You'd never think he passed his exams with flying colours at that posh school he went to. But he's also the sweetest, kindest man I know. He'll probably drive me nuts when we finally get to live together, but I don't care. I love him and that's all there is to it.

What do you think is your strongest point?

I think most people would say it's my dedication to my work. I dread to think how many hours I've spent in the gym and the practice nets over the years. I want to help my team win, whatever it takes, and I suppose I've brought that same dedication to my relationship with Scott. I hate it when we're apart just as much as he does. I guess I'm not capable of doing anything by halves.

What was it like where you grew up?

I grew up in Brisbane. My mum is a doctor and my dad's a barrister, so I had a pretty comfortable childhood. I went to a good school and I had some great friends, so I really can't complain. I got a bit of stick when I came out, but nothing I couldn't handle. Mum was amazing. She was so supportive, whereas Dad…let's just say I steer clear of my father if I can. He's never come to terms with what he calls my 'lifestyle choice'. The truth is he can't stand the thought of his only son with another man. We're civil to each other for Mum's sake, but that's as far as it goes.

As a child, who was your best friend? Tell us about him/her.

My best friend at school was Andy—he's a writer now and still a good mate. We had so much fun together and got into all sorts of scrapes. I told Andy I was gay when we were fifteen—he was the very first person I told. He shook my hand in this really grown up way and said, "That's all right, mate. Makes no difference to me." Then he got together with our other friends, Mark and Barry, and they swore to beat the crap out of anyone who gave me any trouble. I was big enough and strong enough to look after myself, but it was great to know they were all on my side.

Describe a place of perfect refuge.

That would have to be Honeysuckle Cottage, Scott's parents' place in the Lake District. We went there the day after we met, and we really got to know each other there. It was where we made love for the first time too, and you never forget that. There's an open fire and cozy sofas, and shelves overflowing with books. The views of the countryside are breathtaking, and the housekeeper, Mrs B, keeps the fridge stocked with delicious food, which Scott is only too happy to cook. So I'd be glad to hide away with Scott in Honeysuckle Cottage any time. Good food, good books and the man I love. What more could a guy want?

H Lewis-Foster has worked with books, in one form or another, since leaving university. As a keen reader of gay fiction, she decided to try writing herself, and is now the proud author of several short stories and a debut novel.

H. has lived in various parts of the UK and has recently moved to the north of England, where she's enjoying city life, especially the theatres and cinemas. She tries not to watch too much television, but is a big fan of Downton Abbey, and while she's writing, she loves listening to Test Match Special (where they spend far more time talking about cakes than cricket!)

Tell us about your story's world. What is it like in this period or place?

Haven is set in present-day San Francisco, California, with twists, of course. I maintained the basic geography and beauty of my hometown and added new venues as needed, such as my heroine Carina's dance club. I've preserved the current cultural, societal and political norms of our reality and layered in the "fantasy" via the paranormal inhabitants. Vampires hide in plain sight and use their power to manipulate mainstream society and maintain their secrecy. Many humans know of their existence but it's a don't-ask-don't-tell situation. Unless you want your mind/memory tweaked. Or your throat ripped out. The vamps are cranky like that.

Which character in your current book do you think readers will like the most? Why?

Jonas is my favorite and I suspect he'll win over readers, too. . An ancient vampire originally from England, Jonas embodies extreme violence in a pretty package. He's a man of few words, dark and moody, fiercely loyal and violently protective of those few people he loves, such as Carina.

I adore Jonas so much I gave him his own story, a short story prequel to HAVEN entitled "Vampire Code." It released earlier this month from Champagne Books.

When you write, what things do you want close at hand? (Coffee, water, chocolate... pictures of gorgeous hunks for inspiration...?)

Water, laptop, music.

What's your writing schedule like?

A typical writing day looks something like this: Chauffeur child to school, exercise, write, line edit and/or read slush pile for indie publisher, pick up child, spend evening with family. Rinse, repeat.

Any advice for new authors?

Write every day.

What are you currently reading for fun? Anything for research?

For fun, I'm about to start J. R. Ward's Lover At Last from my TBR pile.

What kind of music do you listen to while driving? Same question when writing?

John McCall is a Seacat, an elite warrior of the Sea-anan Empire. He is 27 years old and a member of the royal clan.

Jasira Eversole is a 23-year-old spirit bound to planet Surreal. Even though she is a ghost, she has a dual career as a school's headmistress and a midwife.

Excerpt:

John was drifting off to sleep when he felt soft lips press against his own. His heart leapt in his chest, waking him. He did not wait to respond. He instantly showed his talented Jasira how a McCall kissed.

He had longed for this kiss since the last time. Her kiss was how he remembered. Warm. Hungry. Arousing. John growled. He lured her tongue into his mouth where he could savor it. Her taste made his trip to Surreal worth it.

John felt Jasira's fingers travel down his chest and abdomen, then to his throbbing root. His head fell back, over the tub on a loud groan. "Jasira." He adjusted his hips, giving her better access to his inflamed body.

His racing heart banged harder against his ribs as Jasira gripped him firmly. John felt the world tilt on its axis. Surrendering to Jasira's sensual touch, he clung to the sides of the iron tub and closed his eyes more tightly.

"I want you, Jasira," John huskily admitted. He opened his eyes.

Through their glow, he saw the ceiling. He glanced around. The kitchen was empty.

Interview

What inspired you to write this book?

I read a ghost story written by Anne Rice. In one scene, a male spirit intimately explored the main female character. I was intrigued. When it came time to write John's story, I was trying to figure out who was going to be his wife. That's when I thought about Anne Rice's spirit. I had a lot of fun writing this story.

Which character in your current book do you think readers will like the most? Why?

I believe readers will like John McCall. He is a mixture of Indiana Jones and Hans Solo. He is tall, intelligent, strong, handsome, and has a caring heart. He is also loyal. What more can a woman want?

Why do you write?

I write because I love to write. It's my drug, my addiction. If I don't write, I'm not happy.

Who has helped you the most in your career as an author?

My husband Alan. He has been my backbone since the beginning. Without him, I would not be able to pursue my dreams full-time. Without him, "A Lost Kitten" and its sequel, "A Forgotten Kitten" would still be on my desk instead of in readers' hands.

When you write, what things do you want close at hand?

When I write a new story, or I have to edit an existing one, I need my mug of coffee next to me, and my inspiration image on my computer screen.

When you're not writing, what would we find you doing?

The only time I'm not writing, editing, or promoting, is when I'm brain dead. If that's the case, you will find me either reading, watching TV, or playing video games.

Are you a plotter, or do you prefer to make it up on the spur of the moment?

Plotter? I'm not even sure how to do that. Once I have a scene in my head, I write it down. The story grows from there. I just jot down scene after scene as it flows in my head. Once it's all on paper, I go back and flesh it out, adding more where is necessary to help the story move along and come alive.

What's your writing schedule like?

Being a mother of 14-year-old triplets, I write whenever I get the chance, which is why I work from a laptop. I have spent countless hours working in my car waiting for my kids to finish their afterschool programs.

What aspect of your life do you write into your books?

Hahaha Everything. Love. Family. Friendship. Loyalty. Betrayal. Prejudice. Death. And multiple infants. 

When an idea hits you, what do you do to capture it?

I quickly jot it down on paper, so I can explore it on a later date.

Which of your books was the hardest to write and why?

Book one of the Oceanan Saga, "A Seacat's Love", is the next book I am going to introduce to my readers. I felt this one was the hardest to write because it took place on Earth where there are no magical creatures or magic in general. I had to introduce my aliens carefully and have everything make plausible sense without the story being boring. I hope I got it right.

What's the best gift you ever received?

A Kindle from my husband and kids. Now I will never be without a book to read.

If you could time travel, what era would be your first stop?

I would travel back to the 1800's. I just love the clothes the women wore back then.

Do you believe in luck?

Absolutely.

What kind of music do you listen to while driving? Same question when writing?

When driving, I listen to pop music. I don't listen to music when I'm writing. In fact, I can't hear noise when I write. Noise pulls me out of the world I'm in, in my head and keeps me from seeing my characters and their lives. I have earplugs for those extra noisy days.

What's your favorite movie?

Harry Potter. Independence Day. Jurassic Park. I have so many.

Are you the eldest, middle, baby, or only child?

I am the middle child and the eldest daughter.

Hi. My name is Chance and I'm a recovering alcoholic. Oh, wait. Wrong place for that.

Tell us about Alex.

Well, he's hot as hell, for one thing.

Actually, he's too good to me, but at the same time, he doesn't put up with my shit. It works, ya know? He makes me a better person, which is pretty much how the whole partner thing goes, I guess. Whenever I step on my own dick, he's the first one to point it out, but also the first one to kiss it and make it better.

What do you think is your strongest point?

Being a killer musician, for sure.

What would Alex say is your strongest point?

Ummm…how great my ass looks in leather? I don't know. Maybe my drive to succeed.

I've been accused of being selfish once or twice. Yeah, probably being full of myself. But, I mean, can you blame me?

What was it like where you grew up?

Newburg, New York? Honestly, it was kind of a hole, if you know what I mean. Some rough crowds. Some crime. So you get into your own group of assholes and ride it out. Strength in numbers and all that. Sticking out too far was never a good plan.

What do you wish was different about your life?

If I had a time machine, I guess I'd…ah fuck. Don't make me answer that. I'm pretty sure saying that I'd do the same shit over again would only get me in trouble, and I'm not so sure I'd change.

Describe a place of perfect refuge.

I'd love my own island. White sand, tiki hut with all the amenities. Just peace and quiet until I feel like making some noise with my guitar. I wanna play a concert for a bunch of fishes. And Alex. He'd be one of my amenities.                  Maybe the dog could come too. Maybe.

I visit the social security website http://www.ssa.gov/ because I'm always looking for names that are popular by decade. I also visit Tom & Lorenzo's fashion blog http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ for inspiration when I need to dress my characters.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

My favorite part is getting that spark of an idea and running with it.

What are some jobs you've done before (or while) you were a writer?

One of my most unusual jobs was reading customer complaints card for a major retail company. Most common question on the card? "Do people actually read these things?"

Which of your books would you recommend to someone who doesn't normally read your genre, and why?

I write contemporary romance and I'd recommend The Year of Living Shamelessly because it has a few elements that are found in contemporary romance these days: small-town setting, lots of sexual chemistry, and a hero who won't pursue the woman of his dreams because she's his best friend's younger sister.

What kind of books do you read when taking a break from your own writing?

I read a lot of contemporary romance from a mix of publishers, lengths, heat levels and formats.

What should potential first-time readers know about your work?

I write about people who fall in love and fight for their happy-ever-after. I write women who make mistakes and take risks. They are stronger than they realize. I write men who are far from perfect but every choice they make is to protect the people they love.

I write romance that is set in today's world because I see love stories all around me.

My stories can be fun and sexy or they can be passionate and sensual. Trust and romantic intimacy are important. The men and women in my books are scared to reveal their true natures and reluctant to share their dreams. But in the end they risk it all and dare to bare. 

Imagine you get to go on a dream vacation, but you have only one hour to pack and leave, and it starts as soon as you finish this interview. What will you take with you and where will you go?

I would take my passport, my Kindle and lots of money. My dream vacation would be about comfort and convenience. I would travel light, go first class all the way, and travel to all the countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea.

If your life became a movie, who would you want to play you?

I would want Ashley Judd or Rachel Weisz to play me. Either actress would make me appear stronger, smarter and generally cooler than I really am.

If you were a color, what color would you be?

It would be a shade of brown, like sienna or coffee. Something earthy and warm.

In order to get back to The Fables, Jess is going to have to be more than just a perfect submissive...

When I was asked to turn my standalone novel, The Perfect Submissive into a trilogy, I was very excited--but I also wanted to find out which elements of that first novel that my readers had most enjoyed, so that I could capture some of its flavour in the sequel.

One of the features of the first part of the trilogy that people most enjoyed was the extreme exercise routine the dominatrix Miss Sarah enforced upon Jess. Although The Retreat sends Jess on a very different adventure- complete with a mystery, fairy tales, and a whiff of paranoia. I was determined to include a little exercise along the way.

Excerpt

In the following extract, Miss Sarah and Jess are alone in the bedroom they have to share at The Retreat, and so far Jess knows little of her surroundings...

'Are you warm, Miss Sanders?'

'No, ma'am.'

'But you are tired. As am I.' Miss Sarah regarded the former booking clerk. 'Yet I suspect that, like me, you feel it's unlikely you'll sleep. We are too keyed up by events. A dose of normality would do us good.'

A frisson of expectation filtered through Jess's veins. Forcing herself to deny the smile that wanted to hit her lips, she wasn't able to stop it reaching her eyes as she replied, 'I'm sure you're correct, ma'am.'

Picking up the top cover of her bed, Miss Sarah wrapped it around her naked shoulders, shrouding her body in quilting as she stood with her back against the nearest bookshelf. 'We have a large space here, Miss Sanders; I think we would do well to make use of it.

'For some time now I have been meaning to devise a shortened version of your exercise routine, so that we can fit it into even the most hectic of schedules. As it has been three days since you last had a structured exercise session, now seems the ideal moment to develop such a routine. As a reward for each completed movement I will, to the best of my ability, answer any questions you may have about our current location. A location that is, to answer your earlier question, known as The Retreat.'

Jess said nothing, already foreseeing erotic elation, her mind conveniently forgetting how exhausted she was.

'Get up, Miss Sanders.'

Wriggling free of her insubstantial bedding, Jess already felt warmer at the prospect of what was to come than she had been curled up in the camp bed.

'Face the bookshelves.'

Jess did as she was bidden, wondering what exercise she could possibly perform so close to the built-in unit. As she inspected the oak bookshelf at close quarters, she saw how worn it was; how time had taken its hard edges and polished them to a marbled patina. It had obviously been securely in place for hundreds of years.

Miss Sarah took her submissive's arms, stretching them out along the shelves. Allowing herself to be positioned so her chest was angled closer to the shelving, Jess found her eyeline focusing directly on book after book of fairy tales. From the works of the Brothers Grimm to Hans Anderson, and various other interpretations in between, they were all bound in a manner which, even to Jess's untutored eye, spoke of their antique value.

As Miss Sarah's hands placed Jess's ankles closer together, she couldn't help thinking back to the turret room and its fairy tale connotations. This castle might look like something straight out of Disney, but Jess knew exactly how a few of the original fairy tales had gone. They were not stories she would tell any child without expecting nightmares to follow immediately afterwards.

Her musings about the number of fairy tale links she'd made since Kane had bundled her into the plane was cut short by the insistence of Miss Sarah's palm against the flat of her back. She was pushing Jess in a way that ensured her torso was tilted back a fraction, so her large, almond nipples were buffered against the edge of the wooden shelf.

'On my mark, you will bend your knees so that your breasts travel from the shelf on which they currently rest to the one beneath, and back again. Each flex will only be considered successful if your nipples touch both shelves. You may keep hold of the shelves to aid your movements. You will continue to pump your legs until I tell you to stop. As you work, Miss Sanders, you have permission to ask me four questions. Only four. What it is you wish to know the most?'

Four questions. Already picturing how enflamed her chest was about to become, and hoping Miss Sarah would kiss it better afterwards, Jess tried to marshal her thoughts. She already knew this place was called The Retreat, and she was in Scotland, that Miss Sarah's equivalent was called Lady Tia, and she'd learnt from listening to their verbal sparring match in the turret room that this place was run not just by David Proctor, but also by a woman called Dr Ewen.

'Begin.'

Bending her knees, Jess lowered herself, so that her breasts flopped from one shelf, scraping against the book's spines below, until they hit the next row of oak. Sticking her backside out a fraction to ease the discomfort on her tits, Jess clasped the horizontal shelf supports to either side of her harder. Rising up again, knowing it wouldn't be long before her nipples felt as bruised as Miss Sarah's after her encounter with the vengeful Lady Tia, she let out a blast of shocked air. Miss Sarah's hand had smacked her butt.

'I didn't tell you to stick your arse out. I wish it to remain tucked in.'

'Sorry, ma'am.'

'Are you?' Miss Sarah spoke sharply, 'I think that you wanted me to spank you. Tell me the truth, Miss Sanders. Did you wish for me to hit your rear?'
