New for 2015: Author and Character Interviews #RLFblog #amreading

Romance Lives Forever
Thank you for a great 2014! The Romance Lives Forever blog grew, and some wonderful features were added. For the year, there were 363 posts.

Social Media

The link between the blog and Paper.li helped get out the word about blog posts. The paper is an online daily ezine, and this one posts to Twitter. The blog uses the hashtag #RLFblog, and you can click on Twubs to check its reach.

Triberr did a great job of sharing the news as well. Because of my followers, the tribemates I associate with, and their followers, RLF has a reach of over one million. The program works because it brings new readers, and reminds current ones of new material. It provides an average of 45 - 50 mentions on Twitter every day, and since each post has the guest author's Twitter handle in the title, that means the guest gets mentioned too.

Networked Blogs helped by posting automatically to Facebook. The blog goes to several pages, and is often shared. Did you know the blog has its own Facebook page? Come over and like the page, and then share the day's post, especially if you're one of the guests.

About the Author

Kate has lived most of her life along the California coast. That experience has made her a jeans-wearing, toes in wet-sand, married to a surfer, fog-loving weather wimp, with a hint of East Coast polish from spending her college years in Boston. Family history connects her to Irish and English immigrants, Cornish miners, gold prospectors, and adventurers who sailed around Cape Horn bound for San Francisco.
When she's not reading, writing or brainstorming, Kate walks in the redwoods, feed birds, collect books, apples and leaves; she watches tele-novellas on Spanish-language TV and immerses herself in all things English. Her favorite food groups are butter, brown sugar, dark chocolate, and red wine. Kate's early literary influences were The Little Engine That Could, The Little Red Hen, and Winnie the Pooh. Austen, Heyer, Chaucer, and Homer came later and inspired her to put that first plot on paper.
Kate's heroes are honorable, virile outsiders with some grand ambition; her heroines are practical princesses, who drive those edgy loners into love with good sense and good sex.
Her family and friends offer endless support and humor. Kate says her children are her best works, and her husband is her favorite hero.

Character Sketch: Sir Darius Lee | Leap Into The Knight @mjschiller #RLFblog #SFR

Leap Into the Knight
by MJ Schiller
M.J. Schiller shares details about the creation of Sir Darius Lee in the book Leap Into The Knight.
Title Leap Into The Knight
Genre sci-fi romance
Author M.J. Schiller
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13
Sir Darius Lee is a Knight of the High Order.
But when Darius discovers a stranger in his room in the middle of the night, and the intruder turns out to be a beautiful woman, he begins to question how he is meant to live his life.
Princess Megan of Bethyea is being held captive.
But when two knights help her to escape and bring her back to her home planet, she finds the home she knew no longer exists.
When The Council of Twelve questions Darius about his relationship with Maggie, she tries to flee from The Academy of the High Order to prevent him from losing his knighthood.
Will Darius and Orion find Maggie before she leaves Albion? And if they do, how can they face the decision of The Council? And what about the feelings Orion has developed for the princess?

Introducing Sir Darius Lee

Name: Sir Darius Lee
Age: 26
Gender: M
Birthplace: Albion
Profession: Knight of the High Order
Ethnicity/Species (if not human): human
Describe his/her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars: Six-foot-four, lean, muscular, fair skinned, long, brown hair that he often pulls back and secures with a strip of leather. Strong features, cheek bones, jaw, nose.
Who is the significant other in your character's life?
Princess Megan of Bethyea
How does your hero dress?
Simply. Browns that are able to act as camouflage if necessary. A loose fitting shirt for mobility and sturdy travel cloak that can also serve as a blanket or pillow.
If you could only hear this character's voice (but not see him) what characteristic would identify him?
He has a deep, soothing voice. Confident and calm.
Is the character book-smart, self-taught, widely-experienced?
All of the above. He studied at the Academy, but has learned much through his travels throughout the galaxy.
Does he scrape by, live comfortably, live extravagantly?
Knights are taught to live simply, but he is also comfortable in extravagant surroundings, often having to deal with diplomats and high-ranking officials.
What is your character's viewpoint on wealth?
It is of little consequence.
On what special skills does your character rely?
His wit. His fighting skills. His steady moral compass.
What is your character's family like?
He remembers very little about his family as he was dropped off at the Academy at a very young age.
How do others perceive your character based upon looks, and is this assumption accurate?
Because he is extremely tall, he might be seen as imposing. But, while he can be a fierce fighter, he is really a kind and gentle man who is fair and understanding.
Does your character care about what others assume about him?
To a degree. He would not want people to be intimidated by him…unless the situation warranted it.
Can your hero keep a secret (why or why not)?
As a Knight of the High Order he often has to keep information secret due to the nature of his missions. Besides, he would feel no need to gossip. He is mostly a quiet man.
What inner doubt causes your character the most difficulty?
He really has no inner doubts until he meets Maggie. His feelings for her confuse him at the beginning, but once he has come to terms with them, he is as resolute in his love for her as he has been about anything in his life.
When (if) he lies or is upset, what gives him away?
It is very easy to tell when he is upset because that inner calm that usually exudes from him is missing.

About Your Writer

To honor the person who chose to share your story, please answer the following questions.
Why do you think your writer chose to write about you?
She has a fascination for space travel and the concept of being a knight.
What do you wish your writer had not told others about you?
I really have nothing that I an unwilling to share about myself.
What other character from your book do you think your writer should write a book about, and why?
I think Amar would be a fascinating topic because he likes to live in the grey areas of life, skimming just along the borderline of what is legal and what is not.
Why do you think your writer loves to write?
Hmm…I'm guessing that writing could be a soothing activity. I seldom have time for it myself.
Is there anything you'd like to say to your writer?
I'd like to hear more stories about knights and how they handle the unusual circumstances that come their way.

A Romance for Christmas by Kayelle Allen #RLFblog #holiday

A Romance for Christmas
by Kayelle Allen
Title A Romance for Christmas
Genre Sweet Contemporary Holiday Romance
Author Kayelle Allen
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13
Bestseller on Amazon

A cop at the door on Christmas Eve brings an unexpected gift.
A sweet holiday romance showcasing love, loss, and the spirit of giving.
It's Christmas Eve, and the end of a year in which everything Dara loves has been lost. Everything but her little girl and a fierce determination to survive. When a cop brings Christmas to her door, he brings another gift she never expected to get.
---
"Mommy?" Christine's young voice broke in on her thoughts.
Dara put down the romance she'd been re-reading, the favorite she'd had since she was sixteen. She'd sold all her others at a yard sale the previous week. "What is it, sweetie?"
"Why don't we has a real tree for Chribmas?"
"Why don't we 'have'," she corrected. "Come sit by me." Dara patted the couch and tucked her chenille robe closer around her.
One arm around Matilda, her cloth doll, Christine climbed up beside her mother and cuddled.
Matilda's going to need stuffing before long. Her head flopped forward, face against her flat chest. When did the lace on her dress get so ragged? Dara smoothed the doll's dress. "Remember when Daddy went home to heaven before Christmas last year?"
Christine knuckled her eyes and yawned. "I 'member."
"And then Mommy got hurt in the car accident and couldn't go to work?"
"Uh huh."
Dara took a deep breath. "Well, it meant there was no money for a real tree this year. But I'm sure Santa will still bring you presents." Gifts Dara bought by selling her entire collection of romance novels at a yard sale at her friend Sherilyn's house. "And we drew a tree, right?" She pointed at the crayon-bright drawing taped to the wall. Construction paper ornaments decorated each branch.
"But it doesn't smell like a Chribmas tree."
Dara hugged her. "I know, baby. I know."
"How will Santa leave his presents?" Christine pulled away and got on her knees. "He can't put them under the tree, Mommy."
"Oh, honey!" She ruffled her daughter's hair, swallowing the lump in her throat. "Santa will find a way." She leaned forward and kissed her little girl. "We should get you in bed so he can come. He can't leave presents while you're awake."
She followed her daughter into her room, got her tucked into bed and sat beside her, stroking her golden hair. Christine gazed up at her from under thick dark lashes. Her deep-blue eyes never failed to remind Dara of her late husband.
Jack had been Dara's high school sweetheart. Tonight marked a year and nine days since the accident that had claimed his death. Neither she nor Jack had family other than each other. His coworkers knew, and they'd helped that first year, bless them. His senseless death happened right before Christmas. What if something happened to her too? As an orphan herself, Dara experienced fear and anxiety for her daughter. Tears of loneliness, terror of the future, of raising her daughter without Jack at her side. Anger at everything and everyone. At his company for sending him on the trip. At Jack for going. Guilt for feeling angry ate at her.
The night Jack had left, they'd argued over it and he'd slammed the door when he left. But then he'd stopped the car halfway down the drive, gotten out, and had come back inside to kiss her and tell her he regretted having to go, but that he had to. He promised he'd be back before Christmas. They'd shared a long, cherishing kiss and she'd waved until he was out of sight.
Six hours later, his plane went down over the Gulf of Mexico in a freak storm. All on board were lost.
More guilt and doubt set in with the New Year. Things she should have said. Should have done. Why had she let him go? Why had God allowed her child to grow up without a father?
Her friend Sherilyn had walked through it all at her side, helping her get a job, watching Christine, being there when all Dara needed was to cry. This year, the company had forgotten Jack and the family he left behind. So much for "The Company with Families at Heart." Jack's insurance had paid off the house, and there was enough money to survive for a few months. While looking for a job, she'd sold furniture, her good silver, and pawned all her jewelry, except her wedding ring.
Dara rubbed her face with both hands, willing herself to hold on for her daughter's sake. To be strong. To be both mother and father. Women had done it for centuries. They'd survived. So would she.
"Mommy?" Christine rubbed Dara's arm. "Read me the story about the mouse that's quiet."
"That's a great story. My mother used to read it to me when I was little." Dara snuggled beside her, and opened her daughter's favorite Christmas book. At least she'd been able to give her the gift of reading. When Jack had been alive, he'd always made sure there was money for books. She would miss her own collection, but at least Christine would have something from Santa. "'T'was the night before Christmas..."
After Christine drifted off to sleep, Dara pushed off the bed. She was gaining strength daily, and would finish therapy the first week of January and return to work. Disability paid for the basics - lights, phone, water, trash collection, and she'd never bought anything on credit, refusing to dig herself into a hole she'd never escape once it got started.
It'll be great to have a full income again! I wish it could have come in time for Christmas.
She went to the closet and pulled down a box with a ball, crayons, paper, and three books. Sherilyn had brought over a few things as well. This wasn't the grand Christmas that Dara had wanted for Christine, but Dara had already sold her other valuables. There was nothing left but her wedding ring.
She didn't wear it. Removing it had been part of saying good-bye to Jack.
Sherilyn had said it would help, and it had. Sort of. But not much.
Dara sank into one of the kitchen chairs and put her face in her hands.
Sometime later, when the doorbell rang, she grabbed a paper towel and dried her eyes. The clock over the stove said nine o'clock. Who would be calling at this hour on Christmas Eve? She stuffed the wet towel in her robe pocket on the way to the door.

#amreading Christmas Delights a new #romance by Heather Hiestand @HeatherHiestand #RLFblog

Christmas Delights
This quick interview includes info about the author, and introduces the story.

About the Author

Heather Hiestand was born in Illinois, but her family migrated west before she started school. Since then she has claimed Washington State as home, except for a few years in California. She wrote her first story at age seven and went on to major in creative writing at the University of Washington. Her first published fiction was a mystery short story, but since then it has been all about the many flavors of romance. Heather's first published romance short story was set in the Victorian period and she continues to return, fascinated by the rapid changes of the nineteenth century. The author of many novels, novellas, and short stories, she is a bestseller at both Amazon and Barnes and Noble. With her husband and son, she makes her home in a small town and supposedly works out of her tiny office, though she mostly writes in her easy chair in the living room. She also writes as Anh Leod.
Heather loves to hear from readers! Visit her website for contact information.

Interview with Heather Hiestand

Why did you write this book?
I have been dancing around the Christmas season in a few of my Redcakes series books and wanted to make sure I had a proper Christmas read to round out the series. When you have books that involve so many baked goods, the holidays are a perfect time of year to embrace! I also wanted to make sure Lewis Noble, my hero, had a happy ending, after being shot down romantically in The Marquess of Cake, Redcakes #1. He's become a reader favorite character. My heroine, Victoria Courtnay, has also had rough luck in romance and I wanted her to have a love story.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I've been a romance reader since about 1993. I dabble-read in everything, but primarily read romance. I like books that uplift me and have positive messages. I don't need that much reality in my fiction! Give me true love any day.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
Kivrin from Connie Willis's Doomsday Book. This is such a powerful read and makes me cry. Kivrin is a time traveler to the time of the Black Death.
What are you working on at the moment, and will see from you in coming months?
I just did plotting for Trifling Favors, which will be the seventh Redcakes book. I'll be writing that in early 2015. I've also plotted the first book in a new series for my editor's consideration, and I continue to work on another idea when I have time, set earlier in the nineteenth century than the Redcakes series. My next release will be in August 2015. That is Wedding Matilda, the sixth Redcakes book.
Please tell us about your latest book.
The sweetest gift is the hardest to unwrap. . .
Lady Victoria Allen-Hill never dreamed she'd be a widow at twenty-one--let alone a virgin. Her father insists that she attend a matchmaking house party in the snow-covered seaside town of Pevensey in hopes she'll find a suitable husband. But for Victoria, it's an opportunity to indulge in a passionate affair--and the handsome inventor she meets at the Christmas Eve masquerade ball may be just the man for the job. . .
Lewis Noble is the cousin of London's famed Redcake sisters, so it almost stands to reason that he's just as irresistible as one of their sugar-iced pastries. Lewis catches the eye of every woman at the party--but Victoria is the only one who catches his. He won't be tied down in her father's business, but watching other men court her amid a flurry of engagements ignites a jealousy he's never felt before. A dose of honesty may be just the thing to mend their broken hearts--for many holidays to come. . .

5 Easy Questions is an interview is designed to be quick, easy, and fun. Today's guest is Christine Ashworth.

What is your favorite go-to meal to order when you dine out? Your favorite "I know it will hit the spot" item?
Honestly? A hamburger and fries. Or eggplant parmigiana. Beef panang. Confession time…I like a lot of different foods!
What were you like when you were in school?
In high school, I was impatient with my peers. I was usually in the ballet studio – I knew what I wanted to do with my life, and it didn't include gossiping about football players. Of course, I haven't danced ballet in too many years now.
Would you rather stay inside and watch snow falling, or get out in it and build a snowman?
Both! I grew up in San Diego, and live in the Los Angeles area – I love snow, both watching it fall and getting out in it to build snowmen. But only if I've got the proper clothes, and know that there's a fire and my hubby waiting for me to get me warm.
If you're on Twitter, what's your favorite hashtag to watch?
I love checking in on the #1k1hr hashtag. I almost always make new friends that way, too.
What was the last movie you watched (home or theater)?
"The Red Violin". An AWESOME film that I've watched several times now.

Characters: Writer's Creation or Reader's Interpretation @AndiDowning #RLFblog #writertips

Dearest Darling by Andrea Downing
I see my characters clearly in my head. I hear their voices. I'd know them on the street and I understand them perfectly, what they would do in any given situation. When people ask me, what actor would you have play your hero or heroine in the film of the book, it's difficult for me to answer because I envisage what they look like so plainly, and it's not like any actor I know. So, with all this clarity, all this precise depiction, why do I get the occasional comment in a review that completely contradicts what I know my character to be?
When I wrote Loveland, it was perfectly apparent to me that Lady Alex was the product of a neglected childhood. Her father had made it clear that he hated her, had sent her off for several years to live in a strange country, on a rough ranch, with no one of her own age. He then forced her into a disastrous marriage. Now, with all this behind her, she wanted to be independent—especially of men. She wanted a career. So why was it that a couple of people commented that they thought she was spoilt? Yes, as a member of the aristocracy, she had a maid, wore fine clothes, but did that imply she was spoilt? What happens is that the reader puts his or her own interpretation on the book; one reader might agree with me that Lady Alex was the product of her background with expectations to have these accouterments, but the next reader might have the view that these things make Lady Alex spoilt, that she had expectations beyond the norm. So who is right?
In a way, both of us. A reader can only interpret what she reads from her own knowledge or background of experience. The author must strengthen the characterization enough to get the correct interpretation—the reader is not going to get what is in my mind by osmosis! It has to be down on the page. Perhaps the author must account for the breadth of viewpoints of her readership, the variety of experiences that readers are bringing to the page. On the other hand, I have to ask myself, could I, for instance, have created someone of Lady Alex's background without the necessary props to show exactly who she was?
So, how does the author create a character? First of all, the author shows the back-story of the character—let's call him Charles for now. Charles has a body of experience behind him when the story begins that has helped to shape his character. As the novel proceeds, Charles will act and react to events, and the reader will know his thoughts on these events. When we're in his POV, we'll show his inner conflicts (is he torn between sweet Betty Lou and the glamorous Megan?), the emotions and tensions within him. We'll relate his view on his relationship with other characters in the book; does he hate his father, is he bored stiff by his aunt? And we'll describe his appearance, his quirks and his ticks; he's grown a beard, he plays incessantly with the ring on his finger.
Now comes the reader, Miss R. She gets the back story in drips and drabs so that a picture begins to form. Charles went to a posh school; Miss R thinks that means money in his background—that is, until it is revealed he was a scholarship student. Then her view of him
changes somewhat. He buys a coffee and his hand shakes and a spill burns him. Miss R. wonders if he's ill or nervous? Meantime, both Betty Lou and Megan are equally likeable and have an equal amount of faults. But Miss R is sitting in NYC and thinks the choice should be Megan, while Mrs. Farmer favors Betty Lou. Now we have 2 different interpretations of what's going on, what's going to happen and what SHOULD happen. Further complications arise when it becomes apparent that Charles hates his father and Miss R. did too, but Mrs. Farmer adored and worshipped hers so thinks ill of Charles. Finally, there's that beard. Is it hiding a scar? Is he playing with that ring because he's nervous or because he wants to remember the beautiful woman who gave it to him?
The author has no control over what goes on in her readers' minds and, at the same time, we don't want to give away the whole story at once. Part of the telling is in letting out the secrets and the story in doses, but in such a way the reader reaches the correct interpretation of the character. And if we don't do that, then, perhaps, we, as authors, have failed.

About the Author

Andrea Downing
Andrea Downing
Andrea Downing likes to say that when she decided to do a Masters Degree, she made the mistake of turning left out of New York, where she was born, instead of right to the west, and ended up in the UK. She eventually married there, raising a beautiful daughter and staying for longer than she cares to admit. Teaching, editing a poetry magazine, writing travel articles, and a short stint in Nigeria filled those years until in 2008 she returned to NYC. She now divides her time between the city and the shore, and often trades the canyons of New York for the wide open spaces of Wyoming. Family vacations are often out west and, to date, she and her daughter have been to some 20 ranches throughout the west. Loveland, her first book, was a finalist for Best American Historical at the 2013 RONE Awards. Lawless Love, a short story, part of The Wild Rose Press 'Lawmen and Outlaws' series, was a finalist for Best Historical Novella at the RONE Awards and placed in the 2014 International Digital Awards Historical Short contest. Dearest Darling, a novella, is part of The Wild Rose Press Love Letters series, and came out Oct. 8th, 2014, and Dances of the Heart, another full length novel, comes out in February, 2015.

Timeless and Tender Romance: Lauren Linwood @laurenlinwood #RLFblog #Historical

A Bit of Heaven on Earth

As a young girl, Lauren Linwood could barely wait for the library's bookmobile to arrive every Saturday at the local shopping center. She would check out the limit of six books and return them, completely read, the next weekend. Her favorite game was "Let's Pretend That..." – which still helps jumpstart her when she sits down to write today.
Lauren fell in love with history, reading every biography in her school's library, and continued telling the stories of individuals when she became a history teacher. Focusing on medieval and western historicals, with a few romantic suspense and contemporary novels thrown in, Lauren tries her best to steer her characters on the course she plots for them - only to find that oftentimes they have a mind of their own and veer off in new, unpredictable directions.
A native Texan, Lauren lives with her family in a Dallas suburb. An avid reader, moviegoer, and sports fan, she manages stress by alternating yoga with five mile walks. Follow Lauren's blog, Write Up My Alley, as she saunters through her writing journey, fun facts from history, and life in general.
