Interview: GA Hauser Author of Snapped @AuthorGAHauser #RLFblog #LGBT

Snapped
Genre :Gay Male Romance
Publisher The GA Hauser Collection, LLC
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): X

About the Book

Thirty-nine year old, Bryce Hayes thought when he left the military and joined the Seattle Police Department, there would be nothing he couldn't handle. He'd seen it all; the worst of what mankind could do to each other.
But the Seven Deadly Sins had yet to rear their ugly head. Lust, Greed, Envy, Sloth, Pride, Wrath, Gluttony. And Bryce was about to encounter them all embodied in one man.
What Bryce witnessed on his first phase as a student with Field Training Officer Kohl Abbott, he found inconceivable corruption. As a thirty-nine year old 'rookie' paired with the senior officer from hell, Bryce had no idea when he was told to 'stay put' in the patrol car, that his training instructor Abbott was breaking fingers and kneecaps for protection money from the small local businesses.
While in the Special Forces, Bryce was taught to shut up, to not reveal information. But this time? When the net came down on the corruption he was caught in the snare. Bryce was tossed out of the department with the garbage, but was not prosecuted. He never knew why not.
Twenty-eight year old Joel Vandergrift lived up on Capitol Hill in Seattle, worked as a photographer and taught literature classes at night. But, his real love was writing. Having his first few novels hit the bestseller lists, Joel was gaining recognition and finally thought earning a living as a writer was a possibility… until his apartment is broken into, and his computer with all his work on it, is stolen.
A day later, Joel sees his latest bestseller being sold, but under someone else's name.
The irony of just having met a bartender named Bryce Hayes, whose behavior was suspicious to Joel, made Joel believe Bryce had a hand in the treachery.
But Bryce knew the reality.
Kohl Abbott was writing under an assumed name, his first best seller documenting his 'life of crime'. Even though Abbott had served time in the county lockup for his deeds, he had been released early. Abbott knew dirt on many men, including cops and councilmen…including Bryce.
What at first had been an ultimatum for Bryce from Abbott to find something nasty to discredit Joel as a top writer, had changed. Secrets, lies, and disastrous decisions that were impossible to take back, push Joel and Bryce together- as lovers, then as reluctant enemies. And it isn't until one man finally has had enough that fate takes over.
SNAPPED!
Lust, Greed, Envy, Sloth, Pride, Wrath, Gluttony- The 'Infamous 7' change one man from a cynic into a killer. And Bryce sees first hand, how war is not only fought on the battlefield, it is also drawn from the mighty pen.

Interview with Devin Moore

Tell us about yourself, please.
I'm a three hundred year old feline shifter. I'm considered a Royal, one of the privileged immortal children of the gods. Sure, I'm stronger than the mortal single-shifters. I share my body with three big cats—a lion, tiger and jaguar. It's a given. It doesn't mean I'm better than the singles. They think so, though. Many of them hate us for our immortality. It's why my baby sister was forced into a mating—to try and steal what the gods never intended them to have.
She killed the bastard who'd raped her and I took her punishment. Yeah, it broke my mind. Months of torture will do that, but I saved her from experiencing the same fate.
What is it that you want, but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.
I want to live a normal life. You know, the mate and kids thing? It'll never happen. I'm broken. Hell, I'm fucked-up, plain and simple. No female deserves to be tied to half a man.
What's your internal limitation? Meaning, what is it about you that makes it so you cannot do what it is you need to do during this story?
I'm stubborn. It's not something I'm proud of but it isn't something I can change. I'm a Royal feline. My wants and desires are tripled as my cats feed me their needs. And well, cats take what they want and will defend what's theirs. We're possessive, focused and intent in everything, including out sex lives. Our mates can attest to our devoted attentions.
What inner doubt causes you the most difficulty?
Because of the torture I've suffered, not only is my mind shattered, but so are the minds of my cats. They were only cubs when I was used and abused. I tried to protect them but couldn't. Now, I've got their splintered minds to deal with on top of my own. And they know of only one way to react to anything that threatens them—if they kill it, they don't get hurt or shamed again.
I find the love of my life, my precious one, in this story. Lena heals me, body and soul. She teaches me I am more than a broken male. But by the gods, I know nothing about women, especially human women, besides how to give them pleasure. My Lena isn't submissive like shifter women tend to be. I'm glad. Whether we're fighting or making love, she keeps my entire focus on her. I need that. I need her close enough to breathe her in. She's my everything but like I said, women baffle me. And my poor Lena has to deal with my fumbling attempts to win her love.
What's your external complication? In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
Losing my sanity once and for all. Lena is the key to keeping my mind intact. But I've hurt her in more ways than I care to admit but the worst is by endangering her life. If I can't win her love, being with me might destroy her. And me. I can't live without her.
Tell us about your significant other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
Lena Burnett is the most beautiful female I've ever laid eyes on. She's my chocolate-eyed angel who is the only female strong enough to tame me. She keeps me on my toes and has the purest soul I've ever encountered. I love her with everything I am for healing me, loving me and giving me what I never thought I'd have—a future.
What would that person say about you?
That I'm stubborn and persistent. No big surprise there. I'm a feline shifter. She loves me though. It's hard not to feel it when she's a part of my soul.
What is your family like?
I belong to the Alexander Pride. My twin, Mira, and I aren't blood related. They took us in when our father disowned us. They have my loyalty and love.
Are you happy with the way your story ended? Why or why not?
I got my angel for eternity. I couldn't be happier, but I'm worried about my family and the future. We've made enemies among our Shifter Council and the single-shifters. Most of all, I fear for my beautiful sister. I don't think Mira will survive the spin on her fate. It's damn hard to live when your favorite obsession will forever remain out of reach.

About the Writer

Why did you choose to write about this character?
I fell in love with Devin in Unexpected Find, Royal Pride #1. He's tortured and broken but has tried to live honorably for three centuries. He does this by keeping his mind occupied and living for the sole purpose of rescuing abused shifter children. He never wants another kid to have to live the life he's been forced to do.
When you wrote about this character, what made you the most happy? What made you the most sad?
I was so happy to give Devin what he needed—sanity in the form of his mate. But Lena is everything to him. Literally. He can't function without her. It's heartbreaking but so beautiful.
Why do you write?
Because I want to tell the tales I have collected in my head. I've always had an active imagination and writing gives me the avenue to express myself.
What do you want to write next?
The next Royal Pride book is Favorite Obsession, Josh and Mira's story. It will be releasing soon. After that, I'll take a little hiatus from my shifters to unveil a new erotic paranormal series, Wild Hunt, which will be going to Ellora's Cave. Hunter Betrayed, book 1, will be released summer 2014.
What other character from this book do you want to write about? Care to tell us why?
Josh and Mira, Devin's twin, will have the HEA told next. Like Devin, I wrote Josh as a secondary character in Unexpected Find. He's a human trying to live in a world he will never belong to. The rules laid out by their gods make it clear that human men can never be bonded to a shifter mate. Josh, however, knows two things. He won't lose the woman he loves and rules are made to be broken.
Are any sequels planned for this book?
The Royal Pride series will continue. I have plans to give HEAs to Kade, Xander and Vader among others.
Is there anything you'd like to say to your readers?
Thank you to everyone who has read my shifter books. I feel honored that you've stepped into my world.

Author Bio

I've always been an avid reader and encourage everyone to escape the hectic daily grind with a few minutes a day in your favorite book.
I'm lucky enough to share my cat's home with my three wonderful children, husband, dog and snake. When not writing, I work as a chemist in a pharmaceutical lab.
My passions beyond reading and family include music, classic cars, tattoos and animals (all of which have found their way into my writing in one form or another).
So that's a little bit about me...

Interview with Eva Kenward

Tell us about yourself, please.
My name is Eva Kenward. I am originally from England where I was a companion to my stepmother's aunt. It was a comfortable, albeit boring life. My only relations are a half-brother, and a distant uncle. I love to read and have always been fascinated with tales of the Wild West.
What is it that you want, but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.
I want to be part of my family, but my stepmother and half-brother have other ideas for my future. I have a distant uncle in California. Although he has not responded to my letters, I hope to be reunited with him in the near future.
What inner doubt causes you the most difficulty?
I constantly worry that when I finally succeed in reaching California and find my uncle that he will have even less interest in me than my dead father.
What's your external complication? In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
My greatest fear is to never find my uncle and be part of a real family. My life gets considerably complicated when I lose all my funds, clothing…everything! I am forced to find work while my dream of reaching California slips further away.
Tell us about your significant other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
What would that person say about you?
What is your family like?
My mother died when I was a little girl and my father soon remarried. At first I was excited to have a stepmother, but that excitement gave way to loneliness. She never had time for me, always too concerned with the latest soiree or fashionable pursuit. My half-brother was far worse. He was the heir and controlled my entire existence.
Are you happy with the way your story ended? Why or why not?
More than happy. All my hopes and dreams came true in the wild west I love so much.

About the Writer

You have the length of a tweet (140 characters) to describe yourself as a writer. Let's see what you can do.
I'm a panster learning to plot. I love to research, but I have to set time limits.
Was there anything you discovered about this character that was a surprise to you?
How willing Eva was to leave a comfortable life behind in England and venture into the unknown by herself.
When you wrote about this character, what made you the most happy?
The simple joy she found in experiencing Hunt's family traditions.
Why do you write?
I write because I love to write.
What do you want to write next?
A Regency romance. The central theme is family, but my hero loses sight of what is most important when he becomes obsessed with vengeance.
Is there anything you'd like to say to your readers?
I hope you enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Interview: Zanna Mackenzie author of If You Only Knew @ZannaMacKenzie #RLFblog #contemporary

If You Only Knew
Genre: chicklit / contemporary romance
Author: Zanna Mackenzie
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG

Interview with Zanna Mackenzie

Why did you write this book?
The characters popped into my head and wouldn't shut up! I had lots of ideas and scenes in my head for If You Only Knew and I knew I just had to tell the story.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I would say it is mostly chicklit / contemporary romance though I have read some thrillers.
What is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own characters)?
I loved Becky Bloomwood from Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series and also Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice. In some ways I think they're similar – they both have a mischievous side which endears me to them.
Do you enjoy films and/or TV shows? Which are your favorites?
Yes, I love films and TV and have quite varied tastes. My favourite film is probably The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, it's a fantasy, thriller, romance and I think the chemistry between the two main characters really fizzes. With TV programmes I like all sorts, from period dramas to science and nature programmes. I'm very keen on series like Hart of Dixie, Nashville, Parenthood, Gilmore Girls and Once Upon A Time.
What are you working on at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
My next book (my third novel) is launched on February 7th and is called If You Only Knew. I have another two books planned and partly written so I'm loving working on those again. They're both in the chicklit/contemporary romance genre. One looks at the downsides of dating someone famous and the other has a mystery feel to it when the main female character finds herself having to investigate her family history to find answers to questions about her future.
Please tell us about your latest book.
Would you have the courage to feel the fear and fall in love anyway...?
Faith owns The Coffee Pot in the outdoor adventure sports mecca of Derbyshire's Peak District. She hasn't had a man in her life for a while, as she has been too busy serving cakes to weary rock climbers and mountain bikers to find time for the complications of a relationship with the male of the species.
Then Zane and Matt arrive on the scene as the new owners of the Carrdale Adventure Sports Centre.
Dating Zane, she soon discovers he's not the Mr Perfect she thought he was; and why is he so reluctant to talk about his past?
As for Matt – well, to Faith he isn't Matt at all because he was a completely different person when he broke her heart all those years ago.
With her new boyfriend and her first love running Carrdale as business partners – Matt out to cause trouble and Zane keeping secrets – Faith struggles to keep the peace between them whilst trying to figure out how she feels about the two men in her life...

Excerpt

This couldn't be happening.
Zane had said his business partner was called Matt. She was sure of it. Yes, he'd definitely just introduced him as Matt. But the man standing before her wasn't Matt.
It was Aaron.
Faith wiped her hands on a tea–towel. She wanted to speak, but couldn't get her brain into gear enough to make her mouth form the words.
She'd thought Aaron was gone from her life.
It looked as though she was wrong.
She took a step back, wrapping her arms around herself. Suddenly she felt cold and shaky. Aaron was back? This was impossible.
Yet here he was, standing in her kitchen. She felt dizzy and light-headed.
How should she react? Should she admit they knew each other? Why had Aaron changed his name to Matt anyway? Would he prefer it if the fact they knew each other was kept quiet?
But she knew she couldn't keep something like that from Zane.
As she debated what to say and do next, the room remained awkwardly silent. Zane was looking at her questioningly.
What should she say?
Come on, think, woman. Think.
Too late. Aaron spoke first.
"Faith, it's amazing to see you again after all these years."
OK. So he didn't want to keep it a secret that they already knew each other.
"Aaron," she managed to say. "This is a bit of a shock."
"That's an understatement," Matt said, stepping forward to pull her into a hug.
"Hang on a second," Zane said, pushing into the room. "Aaron? That's your proper name isn't it?" He raised enquiring eyebrows at Matt. "What's going on? You two already know each other?"

Zanna Mackenzie lives on the Derbyshire/Leicestershire border with her husband, 4 dogs, a vegetable patch that's home to far too many weeds and an ever expanding library of books waiting to be read. Being a freelance writer and editor of business publications is her 'day job' but, at every opportunity, she can be found scribbling down notes on scenes for whatever novel she's working on.
She loves it when the characters in her novels take on minds of their own and start deviating from the original plot!
If You Only Knew is Zanna's third novel; her previous books, The Love Programme, and How Do You Spell Love? were both published in 2013.

Queen's Quest
Title Queen's Quest
Genre Scifi Erotic Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Interview with Suz deMello

Why did you write this book?
The concept of planet Janus had been on my mind for quite some time, at least ten years before I wrote the book. Janus is a planet that lacks spin, having been terraformed to always present one face toward its sun and the other in the direction of deep space. I wondered what societies would evolve in these conditions.
I wrote the book while healing from the traumas of death, divorce and writers' block—I was living in Thailand at the time, having felt the need to get away from everything. So while I wrote most of this book in bustling Chiang Mai, my mind was thirty thousand years into the future and many light-years away from our Earth.
What is your favorite genre to read?
Young adult paranormal—stuff like Harry Potter and the Hunger Games. I think that YA fiction is one of the most exciting genres around.
What is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own characters)?
I only get to pick one?
Whoa...I wonder how many people pick Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird? My other choice would be Sydney Carton from Tale of Two Cities.
Do you enjoy films and/or TV shows? Which are your favorites?
I love all media but don't watch much. I'm pretty busy with my life and my writing. Life is not lived in front of a screen, so when I'm not writing, I like to get out of the house and experience others. I'm also nervous about letting TV and movies infect my books, change my characters into clichés. Spending time with real people, with all their complexities and issues, is the antidote to that awful possibility.
So I tend to watch news and humor—I love Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and even Bill Maher. I like Vice and Anthony Bourdain. I'm a House Hunters International addict.
I do love a couple of TV shows that feature spectacular eye candy—particularly Sherlock with two delicious male leads, and Grimm...David Giuntoli is mega-hot.
I enjoy too many films to mention, but I love fantasy, sci-fi and paranormal. Outside of the otherwordly stuff, I like Woody Allen's films.
What are you working on at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
I'm writing the fourth book in my series, Highland Vampires. Readers are likely to see Rakes in Tartan, the third book in the series, soon. It follows the romantic antics of two Scottish vampires in Regency London as they encounter other vamps, dragons and a Nordic fairy called a "huldra."
Please tell us about your latest book.

Character Sketch: Kelly Mancer from Lies That Bind @kathylwheeler #RLFblog #contemporary

Lies That Bind
Genre Contemporary Romance
Author Kathy L Wheeler
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
A modern day woman shouldn't have to marry for convenience to protect the identity of her daughter. So how exactly does Kelly Mancer find herself exactly in that situation? She doesn't want a man. Any man. Danger has a way of changing a woman's mind.
Alex Gentry needs Kelly, but convincing her to help him pluck his younger sister from a dangerous enemy would not be easy. Soon the tables turn and Kelly becomes the prey. Alex may save his sister, but at what cost?

About the Character

Name: Kelly Mancer
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Birthplace: Dallas, Texas
Profession: Bookstore clerk
Ethnicity/Species (if not human):
Describe his/her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars: slight build, olive complexion, tiger-like eyes, long, black, thick, straight hair.
Who is the significant other in your character's life?
Alex Gentry
Does she scrape by, live comfortably, live extravagantly?
Kelly lives frugally. She scrapes by due to circumstances beyond her control. She doesn't ask for much, and she certainly doesn't expect much.
Does she have children?
Kelly has been blessed with a most precocious five year old daughter, who is much too old for her age. The child tends to spout out the most inappropriate words believing no one hears them, until Alex Gentry finally enlightens her. Her response? "Are you gonna tell on me?"
What past event causes your character the most fear?
The corporation Kelly originally worked for was the target of a major takeover by Gentry Acquisitions. When Alex Gentry (lead takeover) had to leave town for a meeting on a Friday afternoon just before the end of the merger, it left Kelly in a vulnerable situation that not only caught her by surprise but changed her life dramatically.
What is your character's biggest need at the beginning of the story?
To provide for her daughter, Taylor; keep her safe.
What is your hero's biggest hopes and dreams?
She doesn't want much. Perhaps a small house with a big enough bathroom to accommodate a bathtub with large clawed feet.
When (if) he lies or is upset, what gives him away?
What a most apropos question. This whole story is based on the lies connected between all the players. Why does Alex insist Kelly and he marry? In current times, marriage is not a criteria to have children. In their case, however, the crux is much more crucial.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

Was there anything your writer discovered about you that was a surprise to one or both of you?
Not so much about me, specifically, as Taylor. Taylor must have given her fits on more than one occasion. She set Alex on his heels too. It was a most entertaining journey.
Why do you think your writer loves to write?
I believe she truly loves to write. In some cases the words have flowed from her fingers to the keyboard in a most impressive fashion. Just ask Lorianne of Maybe It's You, the previous Bloomington Series story. She wrote it in four months.
What do you wish your writer would write next?
Well, I wish she complete book four, Little Kenny's story. He has a fascinating history. I know she has a really strong start.
Is there anything you'd like to say to your writer?
Thank you so much for bringing Alex and me back together. I couldn't have chosen a more perfect father for Taylor. Now, if only his mother would respect our boundaries regarding a dog.

Please tell us about your latest book.
Bronwyn needs a summer job and thinks being a life guard would be fun. In class she's surprised to find there are twelve men and only three women. She's even more surprised when Ross and Jake monopolize her attention and want to date her. But this is only a summer romance. It can't possibly last longer than the ten life guard lessons. Can it?

Excerpt:

"May we kiss you?" he asked.
"I was really hoping you would."
He took her into his arms, and, as Jake pressed against her back, Ross wrapped his arms around Jake's shoulders, enclosing her tightly between them. Jake did the same thing with his arms around both their waists.
Ross ground his hot, aching dick into her belly, and she wiggled against him, deliberately arousing him. Her head tipped back against Jake's shoulder as she watched Ross's face.
"Tease." He whispered the word, then drove his tongue into her mouth. He needed to claim her, possess her, and demonstrate to her she that she belonged to them now. Her hands smoothed up and down along his sides as he fucked her mouth as fast and hard as he could.
Jake let go of Ross's waist and his hands pushed between Bronwyn's body and Ross's until he cupped her breasts, and pinched her nipples.
When they finally pulled apart to draw breath, Bronwyn giggled a little. "I guess that's a special benefit of kissing a swimmer. They can go a long time before coming up for air."
She was probably right, but Ross couldn't think now. "I like that dress, but I'd prefer you naked," he said.
"Let me."
Jake unzipped her dress and brushed it off her shoulders. Ross bent down and took it as she stepped out of it, laying it on the back of a chair, then he unbuckled her sandals and placed them neatly beside the chair. By the time he got back Jack already had her bra off and was kneeling in front of her sucking her breasts. Bronwyn's eyes were closed and Ross's cock was trying to break out of his pants. Quickly, he stripped out of his clothes. Jake lifted his head and turned Bronwyn to face Ross.
Ross stood with his legs apart and pulled her body to him, once again plastering her to every inch of him. Only this time there was only her panties between them, and they were little more than a scrap of green lace and silk. He possessed her mouth once more as he slid both hands inside her panties and flattened his palm against her ass, wanting her to know of his need for her. As he kissed her, he massaged her butt cheeks, letting his thumbs touch her rosette.
He and Jake both hoped she'd agree to double fuck them, but they weren't confident of it happening on a first date. Hell, they hadn't even been convinced she'd agree to come back home with them although he'd had a Plan B and even a Plan C to try to convince her to agree.
However, she was busy kissing him back and widened her own stance slightly to let him play with her ass, so there was a definite possibility he and Jake might be able to double fuck her. But he refused to get his hopes up too high. It was a big ask for a woman. Double penetration was the most intense sex and didn't really say "First Date".
Once again, Jake stepped behind Bronwyn and began to slide her panties off her hips and down her legs. She had perfect hips, rounded ones that he could hold onto as he fucked her. Not sharp protruding bones as some women had. He liked Bronwyn's figure. It screamed "woman" to him, someone capable of playing with two men without being too fragile physically to cope with their needs and their love.
He liked Jake's body, too. Jake was naked now, his cock a long thick flagpole, rising up from its nest of light-brown curls. His torso was all muscle. Sex with a man was much rougher than with a woman. Ross liked both. The freedom to slam as hard as he wanted to into Jake, but also the sweet wet heat of a woman. Both. Tonight he planned to have both. As long as Bronwyn agreed.

Training Season
Title: Training Season
Genre: Erotic M/M Romance
Author: Leta Blake
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Figure skater Matty Marcus is willing to sacrifice everything for his Olympic dream. Despite his unquestionable talent, Matty's lack of discipline cost him Olympic gold once before. Now the pressure's on to do whatever it takes to make the team again. Still recovering from an injury that nearly ended his career, he needs a coach who can keep him in line, but top coaches don't come cheap. Without the backing of his federation, Matty can't afford to stay in the game no matter how badly he wants to win.
When a wealthy fan's whim brings him to rural Montana for a lucrative house-sitting gig over the winter, Matty does his best to maintain an elite-level training regimen. Despite fears that his flamboyant style might not be well-received in these rugged surroundings, the residents turn out to be surprisingly tolerant and welcoming. Even more surprising, Rob Lovely, the handsome young rancher next door, proves to be much more than a cowboy stereotype. Just as Matty requires a firm hand to perform his best on the ice, Rob shows him how strong he can be when he relinquishes control in the bedroom. Taking his new-found courage back into the rink, Matty drives himself harder to find the inner fire he needs to go for gold.
But a powerful new love and the best sex Matty has ever had aren't going to win him a medal. Competition has a timetable, and to achieve his Olympic dream, he'll have to join his new coach in New York City, leaving Rob and his life in Montana behind. As he faces the ultimate test of his spirit, has Matty truly learned how to win—on and off the ice—during his training season?

Interview with Matty Marcus

Tell us about yourself, please.
I'm the most fabulous figure skater on the ice today and I'm determined to prove to everyone, but especially myself, that I have what it takes to get Olympic gold.
What is it that you want, but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.
I want to be an Olympic champion at any cost. I owe it to myself and to everyone who has supported me over the years. I want it more than I want almost anything…maybe more than I want love.
What's your internal limitation? Meaning, what is it about you that makes it so you cannot do what it is you need to do during this story?
I'm flamboyant and uncompromising in who I am. I'm a control freak and I can't accept that there are some things in life that I just can't control, even though that's what I most need to find a way to embrace.
What inner doubt causes you the most difficulty?
What if I can't do it? What if I make the wrong choice?
What's your external complication? In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
What if the judges who control whether or not I can achieve my goal will never give it to me, no matter what I do? What if I choose one thing and lose another?
Tell us about your significant other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
Rob is lovely, warm, giving, loving…and knows how to take control in bed. He accepts me just the way I am and I need someone like that in my life, because I can't seem to accept myself that way at all.
What would that person say about you?
He'd say I'm a pain in his ass, I'm sure, but then he'd say that I'm amazing and he'd smile bright as sunshine.
What is your family like?
They're pretty great, though sometimes I wonder why they let me be so driven at such a young age. Sometimes I wonder why they allowed me to go this far down the Olympic path knowing what it cost me.
What special skills do you rely on?
Being fabulous, of course! And a great media smile.
If someone from your past showed up, who would you NOT want it to be, and why?
The hockey players who used to bully me in the locker room at the rink. I'd rather not see those assholes ever again.
Are you happy with the way your story ended? Why or why not?
I'm happy, yes, because I've figured out what's most important in life and, believe it or not, it's not a gold medal.

About the Writer

Why did you choose to write about this character?
Matty obsessed me from the beginning. He was mouthy and bratty and so lovable that I have had a hard time letting him go.
What do you want to write next?
I'm wrapping up a four book series, a gay coming of age romance that is set in the South. I will publish all four of them within the next year and a half. I'm excited to finally bring those characters to the world because I've been working on these books off and on for about ten years. I can't wait for everyone to meet Adam, Peter, Daniel, Minty, and Renee.
What other character from this book do you want to write about? Care to tell us why?
Angus and Bill from Training Season have been screaming at me to explore their relationship for awhile. I love their relationship and I hope to get around to exploring them.
Are any sequels planned for this book?
Yes, the aforementioned Angus/Bill book, but also a future book with Matty and Rob. I'd love to see where they go after the end of Training Season.

Author Bio

While Leta Blake would love to tell you that writing transports her to worlds of magic and wonder and then safely returns her to a home of sparkling cleanliness and carefully folded laundry, the reality is a bit different. For as long as Leta can recall, stories have hijacked her mind, abducting her to other lands, and forcing her to bend to the will of imaginary people. This absence from reality results in piles of laundry and forgotten appointments. In between abductions, Leta works hard at achieving balance between her day job, her writing, and her family.

Interview with AJ Nuest

Why did you write this book?
Well, I've always been in love with the fantasy romance genre, and knew I would eventually take the plunge into trying to craft my very own fantasy romance. So, one day, I just sat down and started writing. I guess you could say I'd finally reached the place in my career where I just knew I was ready. A month later, the first novella was completed and I had officially caught the fantasy bug. A year after that, I'd turned the first installment into a four book series, and now a spin-off is rumored to be in the works. ;-)

What is your favorite genre to read?
Definitely fantasy with strong romantic elements. I just have a thing for princes, I guess...or any swashbuckling hero that charges in to save the day. I love the world building of fantasy romance, the complex plots and that persistent element of "Oh no! How're they going to get out of this fix?" Fantasy authors always keep me guessing and I love that. There's also a lot of external conflict in fantasy romance (i.e. the characters are kept apart by circumstances beyond their control) and I love that angsty-goodness.

What is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own characters)?
Jacqueline Carey wrote a two book series called The Sundering – Godslayer is Book One and Banewreaker is Book Two. The stories feature a hero by the name of General Tanaros. He is not a good man. He is extremely conflicted throughout the series, is deeply tortured, and lives with the bitter realization that he's made terrible mistakes in his life – even though he has good reason behind these mistakes and continues on the same destructive path during the stories. There is just something about his character that I completely fell in love with. To me, he represents a intrinsic part of human nature. How maybe we would all go back in time and do things differently if we had the chance. He represents our regrets...how we wish things or circumstances would be different all while knowing we are powerless to change them. It's a brilliant, brilliant series I would highly recommend to everyone. Read it. You will never be the same.

Do you enjoy films and/or TV shows? Which are your favorites?
I love both films and television shows, but I don't really watch much TV. I just don't have the time. If I'm going to sit and watch, I usually rent a movie or catch up on the programs I've recorded on the DVR. That being said, I'm a huge Marvel fan and race to the theatre the minute any of those movies come out. Bring on anything sci-fi as well...Transformers, Star Trek, etc. For television I love Sleepy Hollow and Once Upon a Time in Neverland. Oh and I'm a HUGE Big Bang Theory fan.

What are you working on at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
I just finished the final installment of my fantasy romance series for HarperImpulse entitled The Golden Key Chronicles. Rowena's Key is the first of four continuing novellas under this title. Right now, I'm working on a free read that will be offered with the collection release on April 3rd. I also have two other fantasy series clamoring for attention in my head. One is a three book fantasy under the working title Branches of the Willow Tree, which was just contracted by Harper this past week, and the other is a spin-off of The Golden Key Chronicles. I really hadn't planned on writing more in that series but, after receiving so many requests from readers to continue, I folded. LOL

Please tell us about your latest book.
Rowena's Key is a time travel fantasy romance set in both modern day Chicago and a 14th century realm based loosely on Kent. Rowena is an antiques restorer who finds herself drawn to purchase an ancestral armoire in order to retain a connection to her past, only to find her decision an epic failure. The first evening the armoire is delivered to her condo, she discovers a key inside a hidden compartment, and from there things go from strange to outright bizarre. Not only are her initials stamped on the side of the key, later that night the door opens and she finds herself face to face with a man who claims to be a prince from another realm. While she's very suspicious of Prince Caedmon—and, in fact, believes the whole thing to be a set up conceived by her best friend, Oliver—as Rowena learns more about Caedmon and his life, she finds she holds more than just the secret to saving his kingdom. She is the answer behind a prophecy, and the key to unlocking his heart.

Excerpt

This scene is taken from when Rowena and Caedmon first meet, each of them standing on opposites of what she believes to be a computer monitor...

What was with this guy, with his sable, shoulder-length hair and closely trimmed beard? His white shirt was best described as puffy, with ballooning sleeves and wide, ruffled cuffs. The front hung open, exposing the muscled contours of his beveled chest, the roughly stitched tails skimming the thighs of his fitted, leather...breeches?
Oh, God. She chuckled and shook her head. He had to be one of Ollie's theater friends. Bravo for his stunning portrayal of a swashbuckling swashbuckler. Too bad that also meant he was gay.
He lifted the sword in both hands and turned a broad shoulder toward the mirror, the taut planes of his stomach easing in and out with each controlled breath. A trail of dark hair arrowed down inside the waistband of his pants, where his perfectly cupped manhood bulged for her inspection. Oh yes, too bad indeed.
"If you scheme to divert me with your alluring attire and guileless stare, I'll have you know an abundance of courtesans await my nightly dalliance. I am not so easily swayed."
Rowena inched a slow perusal of the delectable landscape back up to his face. His dark eyes glittered in the candlelight, and she mirrored his arched eyebrow. "Oh, really?"
Perhaps she'd pegged him wrong. Wouldn't that be a treat?
She glanced down at her gauzy nightgown, the flickering fire doing little to cover her rosy nipples, pert in the chilly air. But he invaded her space with this theatrical exploit of his. What else did he expect her to be wearing, showing up like this in the middle of the night?
"You'd better be careful." She wagged a finger at him. "Or I'm apt to get busy with some serious despoiling all up in here."
"Enough, Sorceress!" He lunged forward, the blade of his sword slicing the air when he aimed the silver pommel straight at the screen. "Let us be done with this trickery. Name your demands before I smash the glass and ensnare your bewitching guise for an eternity."
A low laugh tickled the back of her throat. Talk about living a role. Sheesh, take the drama down a notch. She stepped close and ran a hand around the edge of the frame. The signal had to be streaming live, what with his ability to interact with her, but there wasn't a wire or a microphone, heck, not even a screw in sight.
She stood back and crossed her arms, shifting her weight onto one hip. Okay, she would bite, as long as Ollie promised this whole escapade wouldn't end up on YouTube.
"Fine. You're extremely gorgeous and very talented. Seriously, you've got the whole English accent down perfect. And while I appreciate all the work that went into this little program, it's about two in morning and I have to get up early for work. Tell Ollie I said good show, props to the production crew and I'm nominating the wardrobe guy for an Oscar."
There. That should call the evening a wrap. She grabbed the edge of the door and swung it closed.
"You wear Rowena's Key."
She froze...and then tentatively eased the door back open.
